| The Chinese Grandfather

| One day Grandfather and I sat on the banks of the Yellow River. We began to discuss all of the bad things happening on the planet. “You must do all you can, little one, to change the bad to good,” he said. “But the world is so large. How can I possibly make a difference?” With these words, Grandfather took me to an area of the great river where rapidly moving water rushed over a temple-sized pool. Above the pool was a large boulder the size of a small house. Grandfather placed me atop the grand boulder in a very specific location and told me to stay very still. “Grandson, you can move this giant boulder as easy as you can move your own self.” Although I was skeptical, I kept silent and very still. “Now stand up slowly and lean slightly toward the water,” Grandfather advised. When I did, the boulder began to slowly move. I, in turn, dove into the grand pool and swum to the other side of the shore. The boulder slipped into the bottom of the pool with a playful splash. Grandfather had discovered a boulder that was balanced exactly to the Earth’s equilibrium. Later, when I had a Grandson, I took him to a similar boulder teetering above another huge pool of water. Now it was my time to show Grandson the wisdom Grandfather had shown me. |
